Interview
Where did you come up with the idea for your book?
The seeds for KITTY SAVES THE WORLD were planted way back when I was writing the third and fourth books in the Kitty series.  This is the fourteenth, so I've really been building up to this big confrontation!  Once I knew the series was going to run for a while, I really wanted to build up to a big finish -- and you'll finally get to see what I came up with.

How did you come up with your characters?
Kitty was born because I had the idea for a talk radio advice show for supernatural creatures first, and I needed a host for that show.  I made her a werewolf because I was tired of vampires.  All the other characters have come onto the scene over the course of telling Kitty's stories, because I wanted her to interact with vampires, ghosts, and all kinds of monsters.  I tried to make them all -- even the monsters -- interesting as well as grounded in reality.

Who did you show your first draft to and why?
KITTY SAVES THE WORLD is the fourteenth book in the series.  I had two friends read the first draft for me -- one who gave me feedback on a lot of the previous books so he knew what I was trying to do with the book, and another who's a big fan of the series, and he helped make sure the book packed the punch I wanted it to.

Do you have plans to a follow up already in the works?
KITTY SAVES THE WORLD actually wraps up the whole series.  I do have some spin-off stories in mind, involving other characters like Rick and Cormac.  I'd love to start something of a supernatural mystery/horror series starring Cormac, the bad boy bounty hunter from the Kitty series.

Open your book to a random page and tell us the first paragraph…
"Hardin announced the litany:  "Five stitches on the forehead, cracked nose, dislocated shoulder and a couple of cracked ribs.  No concussion, thank goodness.  I keep telling her the appropriate response to questions is 'You should see the other guy.'""

What do you like to read? Do you only read the genre you write in?
I read everything.  I try to read as much and as broadly as I can.  I like good writing.  I actually don't read very much in the genre I write in -- I spend so much time in that kind of world anyway, I like to take a break from it when I read for fun.  I also end up reading a lot of nonfiction for research.

Where do you go to escape?
There's a wildlife refuge near where I live and I love to go there with my binoculars to walk and birdwatch.

What advice do you have for aspiring writers?
Write a bunch.  Finish what you write, then start something new immediately.  Read as much as you can, and analyze what you read -- what do you like about it?  What do you not like?  Then apply that to your own writing.

Would you recommend self-publishing or main stream publishing for first time novelists?
I recommend mainstream to start.  It has a lot of benefits and can really give you a good foundation if you decide to move into different kinds of publishing later on.
